Summary
THE TWO RESEARCH projects reported on in this chapter explored issues of resourcing and sustaining the practice of sharing materials online, and had the goal of producing findings that can prove useful to community heritage organizations as well as those who seek to work with them. The purpose of the projects was to look not so much at the management of those collections but, rather, how they were to be accessed and how they could be used to engage their audiences. In the event, this resulted in a strong focus on social media. Social media use has been widely implemented by institutions within the GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) sector over the past decade, and is valued as a vehicle for engaging audiences and contributing to an online presence or institutional brand. It is used by cultural institutions for a variety of purposes, particularly the promotion and marketing of services, events and collections. Social media also provides a platform through which cultural institutions can provide online access to their visual-based digital assets, such as digital reproductions of collections of photographs, illustrations, works of arts, objects, posters, ephemera and more.
It is evident, however, that approaches to the management of social media and the provision of online access to digital collections vary considerably across GLAM institutions. Although such institutions have many similarities, there are distinctions amongst them in terms of their organizational goals, audiences and access to resources. The benefits for GLAM institutions of providing online access to digital collections include raising their public profile, relevance and reach; yet, achieving the desired impact demands considerable commitments in terms of resources such as expertise, time and funding. Such resources tend to be constrained within the GLAM sector, supplemented only sporadically by small grants and fundraising. This is particularly the case for smaller heritage organizations such as local historical societies and community archives, within which there is a strong reliance on voluntary labour, and which are faced with ongoing concerns over their organizational sustainability. For example, they are often stretched to seek and maintain the necessary resources for collection development and the management of their holdings while simultaneously building their engagement with the broader community they aim to serve. In such circumstances, the provision of online access to digitized holdings may represent a key means of developing community engagement and relevance.
Control of Yellow Starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis) and Coast Fiddleneck (Amsinckia menziesii) with Aminopyralid

Yellow starthistle is the most widespread broadleaf invasive plant in the western United States, and it is particularly prevalent in California. Prior to the registration of aminopyralid in 2005, the standard for chemical control of yellow starthistle was the herbicide clopyralid. We report on a compilation of several independent trials comparing the efficacy of aminopyralid and clopyralid on yellow starthistle. Treatments were applied at several rates and timings at 11 locations in four states between 2001 and 2007. Treatments were made pre-emergence and postemergence at the seedling and rosette stages of yellow starthistle. Results showed that aminopyralid, even at the low rate of 18 g ae ha−1, provided nearly complete control of yellow starthistle when treatments were made at the seedling stage. However, less consistent control (80 to 100%) resulted with applications made at the pre-emergence and rosette stages. At the seedling stage, aminopyralid is about four times more effective on yellow starthistle compared to clopyralid, based on the rate of acid equivalent. In the Central Valley of California, complete control was obtained at the lowest registered rate (53 g ae ha−1) when applications were made from December through February. At two locations we also evaluated control of the poisonous native plant coast fiddleneck. Although clopyralid does not adequately control coast fiddleneck, aminopyralid provided almost complete control when applied in the winter growing season. Applications of aminopyralid at the rosette stage resulted in a two-fold increase in annual forage grass biomass the following year. These results indicate that aminopyralid is a valuable tool for land managers and can play an important role in integrated management strategies for yellow starthistle and coast fiddleneck.

Numerical studies of two-dimensional Faraday oscillations of inviscid fluids

The dynamics of two-dimensional standing periodic waves at the interface between two inviscid fluids with different densities, subject to monochromatic oscillations normal to the unperturbed interface, is studied under normal- and low-gravity conditions. The motion is simulated over an extended period of time, or up to the point where the interface intersects itself or the curvature becomes very large, using two numerical methods: a boundary-integral method that is applicable when the density of one fluid is negligible compared to that of the other, and a vortex-sheet method that is applicable to the more general case of arbitrary densities. The numerical procedure for the boundary-integral formulation uses a global isoparametric parametrization based on cubic splines, whereas the numerical method for the vortex-sheet formulation uses a local boundary-element parametrization based on circular arcs. Viscous dissipation is simulated by means of a phenomenological damping coefficient added to the Bernoulli equation or to the evolution equation for the strength of the vortex sheet. A comparative study reveals that the boundary-integral method is generally more accurate for simulating the motion over an extended period of time, but the vortex-sheet formulation is significantly more efficient. In the limit of small deformations, the numerical results are in excellent agreement with those predicted by the linear model expressed by Mathieu's equation, and are consistent with the predictions of the Floquet stability analysis. Nonlinear effects for non-infinitesimal amplitudes are manifested in several ways: deviation from the predictions of Mathieu's equation, especially at the extremes of the interfacial oscillation; growth of harmonic waves with wavenumbers in the unstable regimes of the Mathieu stability diagram; formation of complex interfacial structures including paired travelling waves; entrainment and mixing by ejection of droplets from one fluid into the other; and the temporal period tripling observed recently by Jiang et al. (1998). Case studies show that the surface tension, density ratio, and magnitude of forcing play a significant role in determining the dynamics of the developing interfacial patterns.
Routine clinical outcome measures for patients with severe mental illness: CANSAS and HoNOS

Background
Two recently developed measures intended for clinical use are HoNOS (Health of the Nation Outcome Scales), measuring social functioning, and CANSAS (Camberwell Assessment of Need Short Appraisal Schedule), for measuring need.
AimsWe investigated the association between CANSAS and HoNOS.
ResultsFor some domains there were substantial associations, with high HoNOS rating correlated with CANSAS rating of the presence of a need. For other areas the agreement was less than might be expected. Seven factors were identified within the 22 CANSAS domains, and the presence of needs in the Drug/alcohol and Activities of daily living factors was associated with high scores in the related HoNOS domains.
ConclusionsCANSAS and HoNOS assessments differ. HoNOS can track changes in social functioning over time, but may be less useful for treatment planning, and should not be used to infer the level of morbidity in a case-load. CANSAS indicates when treatment should be commenced or continued. It can also be used as a case-load measure, but may be insufficiently sensitive to be used as an outcome measure at the individual level.

Integration between primary and secondary services in the care of the severely mentally ill: patients' and general practitioners' views

Background
Communication between secondary and primary care is an important aspect of continuity of care. We investigated communication between general practitioners (GPs) and psychiatric teams about a representative group of patients with severe mental illness (SMI). We also sought views on GP involvement in care from the patients and their GPs.
MethodsOne hundred patients with SMI were randomly selected from those under the care of two psychiatric sector teams in inner London. The patients and their GPs were interviewed.
ResultsGPs' knowledge about the care their patients received was limited. Most GPs perceived their role as providing physical care and prescribing. Few patients consulted GPs for mental health care. GPs perceived themselves as less involved in the care of Black Caribbean or Black African patients.
ConclusionsConsiderable discontinuities of care between secondary and primary care were identified. GP involvement in the care of patients with SMI appears limited. Better communication is necessary if care is to be shared.

In [18], the author initiated an investigation of compact, Banach-module-valued derivations of C*-algebras. In collaboration with C. A. Akemann [3] and S.-K. Tsui [16], he determined the structure of all compact and weakly compact, A-valued derivations of a C*-algebra A, and of all compact, B(H)-valued derivations of a C*-subalgebra of B(H), the algebra of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space H. In this paper, we begin the study of weakly compact, B(H)-valued derivations of C*-subalgebras of B(H).

In this paper, we determine in Lemma 4.1 and Theorems 4.3 and 4.10 the structure of δ when R is type I, using I. E. Segal's multiplicity theory [14] for type I von Neumann algebras and results of E. Christensen [6], [7] on B(H)-valued derivations of von Neumann algebras.

We determine the elements b of a C*-algebra for which the maps a → ba, a → ab, a → ab + ba, a → bab are compact (respectively weakly compact), determine the C*-algebras which are compact in the sense of Definition 9, of [2, p. 177] and give a characterization of the C*-automorphisms of which are weakly compact perturbations of the identity.
